The Ultrium Format
The Ultrium format is a new, open tape storage format developed to meet the exacting and growing storage demands of customers over the next decade.
The Ultrium format is a scalable and durable format whose future has been mapped out over an extended period. Each new generation of Ultrium products will double in capacity and performance, providing the opportunity for long term standardization of backup technology.

This exceptionally reliable, high performance format has been developed to meet many of the data protection needs associated with the explosion in inforation storage:

Despite the proliferation of tape options in recent years, no single format covers each requirement as well as the Ultrium format.
LTO technology and the Ultrium format have incorporated the very best features of existing tape storage technologies and enhanced them to create a new benchmark for data integrity and reliability. Each technology, including linear multi channel recording, timing based servo, data compression, track layout and Error Correction Codes (ECC) was chosen for its reliability and contribution to the future growth of Ultrium tape technology.
